HOW TO SLICE CABBAGE THINLY WITH A KNIFE — STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

A quick visual tutorial showing how to slice cabbage finely using just a knife. While a mandoline or specialized shredder can be handy, this method delivers equally beautiful and even slices with simple steps.

🕒 Prep Time: 10 minutes

🍽️ Servings: Variable

Ingredients

  • 1 fresh cabbage head

Instructions

  1. Use a large, wide-blade knife for best control. Remove the first 2 outer leaves, which are usually damaged or dirty.
  2. Place the cabbage on your work surface and cut it in half vertically (see photo 2).
  3. Take each half and lay it flat on the cut side. Cut each half horizontally in half again to get 4 quarters (see photos 3 and 4).
  4. With each quarter, trim the hard core by cutting out the thick stem (see photos 5 and 6).
  5. Position each quarter with the cut side down and the other cut side to your right (for right-handed people; left for left-handed).
  6. Start slicing thin strips. For finely shredded cabbage, cut very thin slices; for chunkier pieces, cut thicker slices. Continue slicing until the quarter is fully cut.
  7. Spread out the sliced cabbage to loosen it. Pick out thicker, tougher pieces like the large veins or core remnants and set them aside—they make great crunchy snacks!
  8. Collect all the shredded cabbage into a bowl. Repeat for remaining quarters. Now your cabbage is perfectly sliced and ready to be used in your recipe.

💡 Tips

  • Keep your knife sharp for clean, even slices.
  • Use a cutting board large enough for stability.
  • The trimmed core pieces can be eaten raw as crunchy snacks.

🎉 Perfect For

  • Coleslaw
  • Stir-fries and soups
