National Dishes Around the World You Must Try

Though only recently embraced as Romania’s national dish, our humble beans with smoked pork hock could easily rank among the world’s best traditional foods. It might not win in ingredient diversity, but it would certainly shine in “Rich Flavors” and “Delicious Simplicity.”

Let’s take a virtual culinary journey around the globe to discover the most iconic national dishes. We’ve narrowed it down to six must-tries (for now!).

1. Ackee and Saltfish – JAMAICA

If you visit the Caribbean, you may be served a colorful breakfast resembling scrambled eggs with veggies and fish chunks. Don’t reject it too quickly—it might surprise you.

Ackee is Jamaica’s national fruit but is often mistaken for a vegetable. Its buttery texture and delicate flavor resemble scrambled eggs when cooked. Warning: it is toxic when unripe!

Paired with salted cod (bacalhau) and sautéed with bell peppers, garlic, onions, and local spices, this national dish is both unique and flavorful.

2. Cou-cou and Flying Fish – BARBADOS

Barbadian chefs serve up flying fish—the national fish of Barbados—steamed with lime juice and spices or fried alongside a dish called cou-cou.

Cou-cou is not couscous. It’s more like Caribbean-style polenta made from cornmeal and okra. Together, this pairing is a regional delicacy that elevates humble ingredients into something truly special.

3. Bulgogi with Kimchi – SOUTH KOREA

For beef lovers, bulgogi is Korea’s answer. Literally translated as “fire meat,” it features thinly sliced marinated beef grilled over high heat.

The marinade includes soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, mushrooms, onion, and a touch of sugar. Bulgogi is often served wrapped in lettuce or spinach leaves.

Kimchi, on the other hand, is the country’s iconic fermented side: Napa cabbage, radish, and cucumber pickled with garlic, ginger, chili paste, and salt. A perfect pairing!

4. Kibbeh – SYRIA

Though Syria’s national dish, Kibbeh is popular across the Middle East. These oval-shaped meatballs are made with ground lamb, bulgur, onion, and spices.

They are usually fried, but baked, boiled, or even raw variations exist. Serve them with yogurt, mint, cucumber, or pomegranate seeds for an authentic Middle Eastern treat.

5. Haggis – SCOTLAND

Yes, Scotland’s national animal is the unicorn, and its national dish is just as legendary. Haggis is like Romanian lamb haggis: sheep organs (heart, liver, lungs), oats, onion, fat, and spices—cooked inside a sheep’s stomach casing.

It’s traditionally served with mashed potatoes, turnips, and, of course, whisky sauce. People either love it or hate it—there’s no in-between.

6. Poutine – CANADA

Though some claim it represents only Quebec, poutine is now a staple across Canada.

This simple dish combines crispy French fries, fresh cheese curds, and rich meat-based gravy. It’s comfort food at its finest—even if not the most refined!
